First his mother, when there were complications during his birth, and he wasn't quite three when his father died of cancer. He doesn't remember them, but keeps photos of them in his apartment. He's pretty ok with how things turned out though. Max was raised by his uncle, Jeremy. Unfortunately, Jeremy didn't pay all that much attention. Max did ok in school, didn't get caught getting into trouble, learned to do his share around the house, and that was enough. Meanwhile he made friends with a guy called Geoff who was a couple of years older. Max had a knack for being observant, and for squeezing into tight places, and he had a good head for heights - all of which Geoff made the most of. Together they taught themselves lockpicking, alarm-tampering, and general breaking and entering. Geoff got greedy, and ended up arrested after one too many hits in the same area. Max never made that mistake. He learned to appreciate the (monetary) value of art, and has built up a few connections over the years. He now works for an art broker, putting his interest in art to good use and making a legitimate career out of a skill that also helps him earn a little extra rainy day money on the side.
